Water quality and security
The Boulia shire is a growing community with a number of developments steadily progressing. To support this growth, a crucial factor high on Council’s priority list is the ongoing availability of reliable, safe and secure drinking water sources and supply. Council has begun the process of exploring options such as a new Water Treatment Plant or extracting water from the Great Artesian Basin, however these require further in-depth investigation to ensure the right long-term solution is able to be selected for the community. The cost of these comprehensive studies are above Council’s current budget capabilities therefore, we are working towards trying to obtain grant funding to help planning works continue. In the interim, a new town water supply bore has been drilled within the town water supply compound. It is approximately 80m in depth. Council will now go through the process of monitoring and testing the bore’s water quality for a period of 3 months. After this minimum testing period, all records will be assessed to ascertain the quality of the water and if it is suitable for human consumption. If so, the bore will act as a contingency water supply, should it be required.
